Starting today, every drive on Pledgr can accept cryptocurrency payments. Whether your backers prefer ETH, USDC, or USDT, they can now contribute directly from their wallets.
Supported Cryptocurrencies
At launch, we support three tokens on the Ethereum network:
- ETH — Ethereum's native currency
- USDC — USD-pegged stablecoin by Circle
- USDT — USD-pegged stablecoin by Tether
Stablecoins like USDC and USDT are pegged to the US Dollar, meaning 1 USDC always equals approximately $1 USD. This eliminates volatility concerns for both creators and pledgers.
How It Works for Pledgers
Contributing crypto to a drive is simple:
- Click "Pledge Now" on any drive
- Select "Crypto" as your payment method
- Connect your wallet (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, or WalletConnect)
- Confirm the transaction amount and approve
The pledge is confirmed on-chain and appears on the drive page within minutes.
How It Works for Creators
As a drive creator, crypto payments are enabled automatically. There's nothing you need to set up. When pledges come in via crypto:
- They're converted to your drive's display currency in real-time
- You can withdraw in crypto (to any Ethereum wallet) or fiat (via M-Pesa or bank transfer)
- All transactions are recorded on the blockchain for full transparency
If you're running a tech-focused drive, mention crypto payment support prominently. Our data shows that drives mentioning crypto in their description receive 2x more pledges from international backers.
Why Crypto Matters for African Crowdfunding
Cryptocurrency opens up Pledgr to a truly global audience:
- No currency conversion barriers — a backer in Berlin can pledge as easily as one in Nairobi
- Lower transaction fees for international transfers compared to traditional wire transfers
- Faster settlement — funds are available within minutes, not days
- Full transparency — every transaction is verifiable on the blockchain
Fees
Crypto payments on Pledgr carry the same 5% platform fee as all other payment methods. Gas fees (network transaction costs) are paid by the pledger at the time of transaction.
What's Coming Next
This is just the beginning of our Web3 integration. On the roadmap:
- Base and Polygon support — lower gas fees for smaller pledges
- NFT receipts — unique digital collectibles as pledge acknowledgments
- DAO governance — community voting on platform features
